All Aboard the HealthLine
By John Breuning
Looking for a quick way into downtown from the east side, or vice versa? Try the RTA HealthLine (www.rtahealthline.com). No, it’s not a phone number for commuters to call for tips on nutrition and fitness. It’s a public transit route that spans nearly seven miles from Public Square to the Stokes/ Windermere station in East Cleveland. The stops along the way allow quick access to PlayhouseSquare, Cleveland State University, the Cleveland Clinic, University Circle and so much more.
It’s easy to use. Grab a farecard from the user-friendly machine in any of the 58 sheltered stops along the route and hang tight for a few minutes – no more than ten – for the next hybridtechnology rapid transit vehicle (RTV). It’s a comfortable, secure, quiet and environmentally-friendly ride. Just be ready to show your farecard to any transit cops on board. They’re in the business of making sure the ride is safe, orderly and uneventful.
With stops at approximately every five or six blocks, you can get off within walking distance of any healthcare facility, store, educational center or cultural attraction along Euclid Avenue. If you’re headed east, the HealthLine will take you from Public Square to University Circle in just 12 minutes. If you’re westbound, the ride to Public Square drops you off at East 2nd, right in front of Tower City, where you’re just minutes away from Quicken Loans Arena, Progressive Field and any of the nightlife along East Fourth Street. Or if you’re headed even farther west, you can pick up the Red Line inside Tower City—it will take you all the way to Cleveland-Hopkins International Airport.
Each stop has its own system of crosswalks. Pay attention to these, as some of the stops are located in high-traffic areas.
That’s all there is to it. A couple bucks and a few minutes in a smooth ride and you’ve made the connection from downtown to the near east side.
Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE)
Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE) offers more than 250 daily departures to 75 nonstop destinations across the US and to Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.
CLE is the Midwest hub for Continental Airlines. Passengers can choose from nine air carriers including: Air Canada Jazz, American Eagle, Continental, Delta, Midwest/Frontier, Southwest, United, US Airways and USA 3000.
With 24-hour curb-side valet and 6,800 on-airport garage parking spaces, parking is never a problem at CLE. The economy surface lots offer an additional 600 close-in parking spaces and our best rates.
CLE’s new AIRMALL concessions program will continue to add new restaurants and shops throughout 2010. The AIRMALL has dramatically improved customer options for dining and shopping at prices you would pay outside the airport.
Plus, CLE has introduced numerous recent enhancements including a dedicated taxi program with new vehicles and upgraded customer service, free WiFi and a new cell phone lot to conveniently await arriving guests.

So Much to Do and So Little Time (We Hope)
By John Booth
Let's face it . . . Nobody really relishes the prospect of spending extra time at the airport. But Cleveland Hopkins International's (www.clevelandairport.com) new Airmall goes a long way toward giving visitors a warm welcome to and an enjoyable send-off from Northeast Ohio.
The already largely-completed 76,000-square-foot overhaul of the airport's entire retail and dining operations should be finished this year and, when it is, you'll find 55 new stores and restaurants to visit at the region's air travel gateway.
The array of choices includes several outlets that showcase the best of Cleveland Plus, from the full-service Great Lakes Brewing Company restaurant representing the state's first microbrewery to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum Store with its eye-popping display of plasma screens reminding everyone where rock lives. Locally-loved Panini's Bar and Grill's signature freshly-prepared overstuffed sandwiches are here, along with Fragapane Bakeries' delicious treats, which can be found at the Hudson News Euro Café.
If you've already eaten, why not get in a little shopping? Travelex, the world's largest foreign exchange retailer, now offers a pre-security location at Hopkins in addition to its original store. Johnston & Murphy, Taxco Sterling and I-Tech X-Perience are among the other outlets within the concourse.
Although the new locations are already receiving rave reviews, there are still more to come: New additions to the Airmall on their way include a Swatch store, a BluWire electronics outlet, an Obrycki's Crab House and Seafood Restaurant and a regional favorite for hot wings, Quaker Steak & Lube.
And here's another welcome upgrade--Airmall's tenants operate under a "Regular Mall Prices" philosophy, meaning you'll either have more cash to take home or more to enjoy during your stay in Cleveland Plus.
Not a bad way to spend your first or last few hours in Northeast Ohio!
