The present job climate in the private sector still poses significant challenges for those of us who are approaching or who have recently retired. We are continuing our efforts to identify resources and employers to assist those seeking post retirement employment. We have received positive feedback from those who have used the job data bank on RetiredBrains.com, a site described in the last issue of The Eighteen Eleven. This is a resource available to us and we encourage our members to try it out. The founder of RetiredBrains.com, Art Koff has made available 10 copies of his book, “Invent your Retirement Resources for the Good Life.“

I was invited to attend the annual conference of the American Society on Aging in San Francisco April 26 – 30, 2011. This is the largest conference in the United States that addresses the many issues and concerns of those over the age of 50. Over three thousand representatives from various private and governmental organizations were in attendance. Some of the workshops provided insightful discussions ranging from caring for emotionally or dependent family members to how to make the second half of life more meaningful. One demographic issue that could affect many of our members stood out. A growing number of retirees over the age of 50 are now being defined as members of the “Sandwich Generation.” This is defined as people who care for their aging parents while supporting their own children. For those of us that are or will fall into this group, there are significant ramifications regarding our financial and employment status. Our retirement annuities and health benefits could be significantly strained with the added burden of caring for elderly parents. This in turn could have ramifications for the type of employment we seek or accept. We may find ourselves having to work longer or take retirement jobs that are not what we were looking forward to. All of this could have a significant effect on the quality of life we envisioned in retirement. The purpose of this is to point out the importance of starting to plan for retirement as early as possible. As time and resources permit, we will identify resources to assist our members in planning for and enhancing their retirement years.

Members of the Philadelphia Chapter had an opportunity to attend a preretirement transitional seminar on May 24, 2011. This program brought together employers who were interested in hiring retired law enforcement officers. Employers described the skills and experiences they look for coupled with attitudes and preparation they thought were critical in the job-seeking process. The program was sponsored by the American Society for Industrial Security International, the Philadelphia Police Department, Fraternal Order of Police and the Philadelphia Crime Prevention Council. We will evaluate this in terms of replicating the program for our members in various locations around the country.

Transition planning varies widely depending on training, experience and personal preference. Retired member John Jupin (Department of Labor IG) suggests that members approaching retirement who have financial investigative training and experience consider preparing for employment as a fraud examiner. White collar crime costs our society billions of dollars annually along with the personal and organizational harm that follows. John is a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE). This designation along with membership in the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners has enabled him to work for private companies and corporations assisting in detecting fraud. The CFE designation has also allowed him to network with other fraud examiners to keep up with current trends and to continuously maintain his skill level.
