Bargains Abound

Built to resemble an old train depot, the Lodi Station (www.lodioutlets.net) outlet mall’s theme is epitomized by the two custom-made trains that run year-round through the mall. Of course, you’ll want to do more than ride the train when you make the trek out to the mall, about a 30-minute drive west from Cleveland. Check the website beforehand as it lists in-store specials and extra discounts. And expect to do a bit of digging for deals. On my recent trip, discounts at the Polo store appeared minimal, but a sweater that normally sold for over $200 was marked down to under $50. The Reebok store also has a good selection of odd-sized shoes (all the way up to size 18) at prices that vary from $19.99 and up. There’s a spacious food court and a good variety of stores (including the only real Bath and Body Works outlet store you’ll find in the Tri-State area). The outlet mall is close to Holmes County’s Amish country, which might make a good side trip.

Head southeast from Cleveland to find another bargain bonanza. Set on a scenic man-made pond that you cross via a series of pedestrian bridges, the Aurora Farms Premium Outlet Mall (www.premiumoutlets.com/aurora) offers its share of bargains and features a slightly different selection of stores. While places like Journeys (the discount shoe store) don’t have anything different from what you’ll find at the mall, other stores provide more serious discounts. Higher end stores like Calvin Klein, Brooks Brothers, DKNY, Saks Fifth Avenue and Coach offer discounts for products not normally discounted much at department stores. There’s a terrific Banana Republic store that offers sales far better than what you’ll find on the Banana Republic website. Check the Aurora Farms website ahead of time for a list of store specials, including a regular Tuesday promotion for shoppers over age 50. Located about 30 minutes from Cleveland, the mall is close to Geauga Lake’s Wildwater Kingdom so you might want to make a stop there part of your itinerary, too.
