The event was covered liveon a local radio station and televised by local and regional television newsoutlets. The temperature of the Atlantic Ocean was a frigid 37 degrees.The plunge, which raises donations for Special Olympics New Jersey, broke the $1,000,000 threshold again this year. On February 15, 2011 members of FLEOA Chapter 11 Eastern North Carolina met for a lunch meeting. U.S. Marshall Scott Parker, Eastern District of North Carolina addressed the group. The attending chapter members collected more than one hundred and eighty-five items including canned foods and nonperishables which were donated to the local food bank.
On March 24, 2011, the South Florida Chapter held elections for chapter officer positions. Congratulations to the following: President John Bottone, Immediate Past President Eddie Cruz, Executive Vice President Scott Savedow, Vice President South John Stienhilber, Vice President North Manny Puri, Treasurer Bernie Rodirguez, Secretary Jay Karlovitch, and Sgt at Arms Nick Lupo.
On April 9th, the Chapter held its 2nd Annual Kickboxing/MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) Charity event. More than 500 people attended the full day event, including FLEOA National President Jon Adler. The day started with a Power Boat poker run and topped off with a Charity Fight show in honor of the FLEOA Foundation. The MMA event included five MMA matches, five kickboxing matches, and two ISKA title fights. Congratulations to Eli Zen, winner of the MMA ISKA title fight.
On April 14th, DEA Survivors Benefit Fund (SBA) hosted the Kiki Camarena Golf Outing in Weston, FL. The golf outing was attended by DEA personnel and FLEOA members from across the nation in honor of DEA Special Agent Kiki Camarena who made the ultimate sacrifice.Funds raised from the outing go to the DEA Survivors Benefit Fund.
On April 21st the chapter held a Meet and Greet at Ra Sushi in Pembroke Pines, FL. The meeting was attended by CGIS, DEA, ICE, FBI, HUD, CBP and Probation members. Topics discussed at the meeting included the current state of the federal budget and how it affects federal agents, and the announcement of the selection of Miami as the site for the November FLEOA National Conference. The conference will be held at the Miami Beach Resort. The next chapter event will be the Mets vs Marlins game on July 23rd.
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – On December 26, 2010 Puerto Rico (PR) Chapter 15 officers donated a tabletop fingerprint station to leaders of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) Venturing Troop #12 based at Levittown, PR. BSA Venturing Troop #12 has joined forces with PR Chapter #15 to promote child safety through future children identification events sponsored by the troop. Their next event will be the 2011 Scouts Jamboree-Emajagua Bayamon District to be held in March. BSA Venturing Troop 12 members received training on fingerprint taking from volunteer Deputy U.S. Marshals from the U.S. Marshals Service, District of Puerto Rico. They utilized their newly learned skills at the 2011 Scouts Jamboree- Emajagua Bayamon District in March. The troop also served as a force multiplier during the Take 25 events in May.
Once again, we encourage current Chapter #15 members and FLEOA members from other Chapters who have recently PCS to Puerto Rico to update their contact information to include address, email and phone numbers by contacting FLEOA’s Administrative Services, or going to www.fleoa.org, or by reaching out to any of the chapter officers. We want to be able to keep you informed of the events we are planning for 2011. Remember to invite your fellow federal agents, active or retired, residing in Puerto Rico who are not yet members to join FLEOA Chapter 15.
On April 19, 2011, while training for the annual first responders Brotherhood Ride, retired CBP pilot, and FLEOA Chapter 18 member, James Robinson “Rob” Moorhead, age 57, died in a tragic motor vehicle accident when he was struck while riding his bicycle in a rural area near Baton Rouge, LA. Rob began his federal law enforcement career as a pilot with the (legacy) U. S. Customs Service Aviation Operations, Belle Chasse, LA, in July 1987 which later became the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), a bureau within the Department of Homeland Security. Rob retired over a year ago and worked as an emergency medical services pilot for Metro Aviation which serviced Acadian Ambulance.
Rob was born in Bethesda, MD, and raised in Gaithersburg, MD. Rob proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps, and Marine Corps Reserve, and had been activated for Operation Desert Storm and retired as a Lt. Colonel. Rob was an active member of FLEOA Chapter 18 and participated in many organizations including the Baton Rouge Marine Corps League and several bagpiper organizations which included the Baton Rouge Caledonian Pipes and Drums. Rob was an avid bicyclist and a bagpiper and was the first bagpiper for CBP Pipes and Drums.
Rob is survived by his wife of 25 years Julie Roane Moorhead, son David, and three daughters; Elizabeth, Victoria and Amanda; parents Carlton and Nan Moorhead; brother Christopher, and extended family, nieces, and nephews. A memorial service for Rob was held on Saturday, April 23, 2011, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Baton Rouge, LA, and our brother was laid to rest at Port Hudson National Cemetery in Zachary, LA on April 27, 2011. Current and former co-workers attended the standing room only memorial service and traveled from as far away as Kansas.
Rob was lovingly known as “Sorehead” and will be missed by all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, Rob’s family asked that donations be made in Rob’s memory to: www.active.com/donate/brotherhoodride2011
Well all, Chapter 21 has been pretty busy thus far. We ended 2010 with the annual Holiday Party at Bookies Bar & Grille, Detroit, on December 4, 2010. Over a hundred people attended for the event and thanks to everyone for coming! As always, good times were had by all. on January 23, 2011, we had the 6th Annual NFC/AFC Football Party at Gus O’Connor’s, Novi, Michigan. Roughly 80 members participated. Special thanks to John Tiano (DHS-OIG) for organizing this great gathering.
On March 10, 2011, Chapter 21 and the Federal Criminal Investigators Association (FCIA) cohosted a meet and greet for new(er) agents in the United States District Courthouse, Detroit. Steve Moore (IRS-CID) did an incredible job at coordinating this event. Over 120 agents attended where a common theme of ‘we all bleed blue’ and ‘we’re not in this alone’ was relayed from the Special Agents in charge of ATF, FBI, IRS, USMS, Postal Inspectors and DHS, and U.S. Attorney Barb McQuade. The keynote speaker for the event, Mike Babcock, head coach of the Detroit Red Wings, gave a great speech on team building and relying on each other to get the job done. To all those who attended and/or participated in the event, thank you.
On March 18, 2011, we celebrated the 2nd Annual St. Patrick’s Day Party at McFadden’s, Grand Rapids, Michigan. Bill Brown and Ryan Maring (SSA-OIG) did an amazing job organizing this event again. A total of 67 attended the event from the following agencies: USAO, SSA-OIG, USPD, ATF, HUD-OIG, USSS, USBP, TIGTA, DOL-OIG, USMC and USPS. Also in attendance were representatives of Kent County Loss Prevention Task Force, Grand Rapids Police Department, MDOC and iSekurity. Thanks also goes to the SSA-OIG interns who helped make this event such a success: Brad Birkholz, Melanie Morley, Todd Workman, Ian Fields and Ryan Ykimoff.
Chapter 22 collected items for ESA’s International Hope for Heroes project from March 1st through March 25th, 2011. The Hope for Heroes project provides an opportunity to show honor and appreciation for our country's service men and women. Through this program, service men and women all across the world receiving care packages with conveniences of home (including personal care items, snacks, DVDs, and magazines), letters of appreciation and holiday surprises. Chapter 22 donated $1,000 and raised enough additional funds from its membership to purchase and fill 50 backpacks full of supplies for wounded soldiers.

On March 8, 2011, Deputy U.S. Marshal John Perry, 48, was killed in the line of duty from gunshot wounds received while serving an arrest warrant on a residence in St. Louis, Mo. Following Perry's death, Chapter 22 collected donations from its membership and on May 19, 2011 presented two checks; one from the FLEOA Foundation and one from Chapter 22 to the children of Perry. The checks totaled $6,000 and were provided to the John Perry Children's Benefit Fund for their college education.
On February 11, 2011, Chapter 32 officers and Secret Service Sas Mollie Wheeler and Tim Gray met with school administrators at Thomas Crossroads Elementary School in Sharpsburg, Georgia. The 2011 Children’s Safety Day Event was planned and set to take place on May 20, 2011.
On March 18th, Chapter 32 held an officers meeting and finalized plans for the Children’s Safety Day Event. Officers also discussed and approved dissemination of funds to assist the family of Federal Air Marshal member William Fitzgerald who had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. It is especially noted that the FLEOA Foundation contributed a generous donation to the family of FAMF itzgerald as well. The Chapter 32 Spring Luncheon was also planned and scheduled for May 5th.
The Atlanta Chapter congratulates the recipients of the 2009 Prosecutorial Excellence Award for the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the FBI JTTF in the Northern District of Georgia for their outstanding work with Operation Northern Exposure. Those recipients are AUSA Robert McBurney (NDGA), AUSA Chris Bly (NDGA), Paralegal Kim Casperson, Intel Research Specialist Eric De La Barre, and Eastern District of New York AUSA Alexis Collins. Through the efforts of the prosecutorial team, together with JTTF investigating case agents SA Kathryn Wilz (DCIS), and SA Mark Richards and SA Michael Sherck (FBI), the United States was protected from possible terrorist acts during 2005. Letters of congratulations were mailed to the award recipients who were notified the awards will be presented at the chapter’s Holiday luncheon. FLEOA National President Jon Adler will make the presentation.
On May 5th, Chapter 32 held a Spring Luncheon catered by Healthy Appetite. Approximately 60 members were in attendance and were shown an excellent presentation on the 1996 Olympic Park Bomber Eric Rudolph by FBI SA Darin Werking. A donation was also collected for Deputy Shane Charles who was shot in the line of duty while serving a warrant and is recovering at Shepard Spinal Clinic in Atlanta. Deputy Charles assisted the U.S. Marshal's Fugitive Task Force on several occasions in the Buchanan County, Virginia area.. A donation from the chapter of $200 and personal donations of $300 collected from chapter members at the luncheon (total $500) was deposited by chapter Vice President Ray Johnson (FBI) in a local bank fund to assist Dep. Charles’ family. Members were brought current on the latest efforts of FLEOA’s national leadership by chapter President Dan Craven. Two membership renewals were won as door prizes. Members were reminded to volunteer for the Kids’ Safety Event on May 20, 2011.
On Sunday, May 15th, Chapter 35 Minnesota sponsored a chapter outing at the Minnesota Twins baseball game. This was in recognition of National Peace Officers Memorial Day by the Minnesota Twins. Although the weather was brisk and the Twins lost to the Toronto Blue Jays, it turned out to be one of the best attended chapter events. Agencies that were represented included: USDA-OIG, ATF, CGIS, IRS-CID, USPS-OIG, NPS, and USPIS. Stay tuned for upcoming summer events, including the possibility of a chapter outing at the Saint Paul Saints in August.
On Friday, May 13, 2011, Chapter 45 and the Ring Factory Elementary School PTA co-sponsored a Fingerprint the Children Event, in support of National Missing Children's Day, at Ring Factory Elementary School in Bel Air, Maryland. Approximately 60 children were fingerprinted during the event. Special thanks to Chapter Treasurer Elise Woods (DOT-OIG) for organizing the event and also to Officer Dave Fitzgerald (DHS) and Lt. Tim Frye (Maryland State Police) who provided assistance.
Mark your calendars for the 3rd Annual Summer Family Picnic, co-hosted with Chapter 9 (DC). The event will be held on Sunday, August 28, 2011 at High Ridge Park, 10100 Superior Avenue, Laurel, Maryland. There will be fun, food and games -a great afternoon for those in attendance. FLEOA Chapter 50 was pleased to co-host at the May 9, 2011 lodge meeting of the Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge #26 Centerville, which featured Sheriff Steve Mansfield and Detective Sergeant Dusty Breen, Lewis County (WA) Sheriff’s Office. The meeting included a presentation regarding issues involving citizens’ use of deadly force. The powerpoint presentation accompanied with a hardcopy handout, was on target, concise, and comprehensive in summarizing issues involving the use of deadly force by civilians within the state, including concealed weapons licenses and transport considerations. Many thanks to Sheriff Mansfield and Detective Sergeant Breen for the tremendous time, preparation, effort, and care they took to provide a most informative and essential briefing on this very important topic. The chapter president is working on getting the powerpoint presentation available in electronic format; in the meantime, the hardcopy powerpoint presentation in e-mail format can be obtained by e-mailing the Chapter President at firstname.lastname@example.org or contacting him at 360-951-9298. The chapter is also looking into having the presentation provided in person during a future luncheon restaurant chapter meeting in Tacoma, WA.
My apologies about the incorrect date published in the last 1811 for our next scheduled major event (2 days off target)…I have dismissed our Chapter Secretary (that would be me!) Over the mistake….Our next chapter activity on the calendar, our summer picnic, will happen on Saturday, August 13, 2011, the weekend following Seattle’s SEAFAIRw eekend, the latter which occurs on the first weekend in August 2011, which includes hydroplane boat races and the world reknown U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Team, The Blue Angels. Again, on Saturday, August 13, 2011, from 11:00am – whenever, the chapter will host a FLEOA/IPA/FOP picnic at Owen Beach, Pt. Defiance, located just minutes away west of the Highway I-5 and SR-16 interchange in Tacoma, WA. It’s a good old fashioned family style barbeque. Pets are welcome on leashes- cats included. In the photo gallery, there are several pictures of the picnic grounds and waterfront at Owen Beach. It is a gorgeous and beautifully appointed place to host a picnic, so make it a point to bring your family and friends (and furry friends). For FLEOA members and their guests, there is no charge other than showing up. In addition to the last article, if you have a favorite side dish or dessert you would like to share, feel free to bring that too…we will be grateful in advance! Parking is provided free by the park just a couple of minutes walk from the picnic site. We are expecting great weather, but do bring a light jacket/sweater as a breeze off Puget Sound often shows up by the mid-afternoon. This is the only invite notice the chapter is publishing, so we hope to see you there!
On Monday, August 22, 2011, the DEA Seattle Field Division will host the 8th Annual Seattle Field Division 2011 Golf Tournament and Luncheon Raffle/Auction, which will be held this year at the Fairwood Golf & Country Club in Renton, WA. For the $125 registration fee, you get the driving range, 18 holes of golf, a golf cart, snacks while golfing, a great lunch and beverages (while on the course and at lunch). Check-in/registration will occur mid-morning complete with some great giveaways, followed by 18 holes of golf, followed by the luncheon and raffle/auction. Registration can be found at www.deamemorial.org (under the “Golf Tournament” tab) and which will list the who, where, what, when, why, and how of the tournament. Consider participating in the raffle and/or auction for some awesome prizes/items, the proceeds of which will go to a most worthy cause. All you will have to do is to follow the website directions, and stand by to have another great day of golf, food, drink, and fellowship! FLEOA Chapter 50, along with several great vendors, will be co-sponsoring the tournament. Chapter 65 held a meeting March 25, 2011 to conduct business and to watch basketball games from the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Men's basketball championship. There was plenty of pizza and beverages to go around. Chapter President Tim Kasun presided over the meeting. Agencies represented by the members include HIS, ATF&E, HHS-OIG, SSA, IRS-CI, and a retired member from IRS-CI.
The following was discussed at the meeting:
• There was discussion about putting together kits for National Missing Children’s Day. The parents/guardians of the children will put pictures, DNA samples, and other pertinent information in the kit to turn over to law enforcement officials in the event the child is missing. Tim Kasun has a tent that can be set up outside of sporting events, stores, and other locations to distribute kits.
• Other outreach ideas were discussed. One item brought up was to volunteer at Mission For All Nations, which provides food and personal use products to families who cannot afford to purchase them. Help can include assisting families to pick out supplies or to help with stocking items in the pantry.
If you have an idea for outreach, community service, or just plain having a good time at an event, let the chapter know! FLEOA Chapter 65 belongs to its members and needs your help to bring forward ideas. Be prepared to own your idea. You take the lead to organize the event and the chapter officers will make sure the event gets funded if at all possible. The following gmail accounts have been set up for officers. If you are an officer, you should have received an email with the password to access the email account for your position. The email accounts also have the contact list to send emails to members. Any questions accessing the account should be forwarded to Ed Sealock.
On April 21, 2011, the FLETC Chapter hosted its meeting at Pam’s #1. The packed house sang happy birthday to Pam as they enjoyed their refreshments. This is a unique chapter because it is based at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center and you just never know who will show up at the meetings.
FLEOA National President Jon Adler joined Chapter representative Paul Duffy, USMS, in welcoming all that attended. GSA-OIG AP Jean Kanokogi was on hand to join in the festivities as well as NATIA President Tim McGinnis and Special Agents from the USMS, DCIS and the IGITP 102 Class which was comprised of many OIG’s. The recruitment efforts were in full swing, the door prizes were phenomenal and generous, and the laughter and shared camaraderie was priceless. The next Chapter event will be May 19, 2011 at 1900 hours.
On May 3, 2011, Chapter 99 Officers held an executive meeting at Molly Brannigans Restaurant in Harrisburg, PA. The following chapter officers attended the meeting: President – Scott Endy (ATF), Vice- President - Mark Andrasi (DEA), Treasurer - Brad Reiff (USMS), and Secretary - Mark Buckwalter (USP). Led by Chapter President Scott Endy, the officers reviewed the chapter budget and began planning upcoming membership meetings and events. Events discussed at the meeting include Chapter officer elections, the Chapter’s participation in the National Missing Children's Awareness Day, the holiday party, and the Annual Family Picnic.
The Chapter 99 Annual Family Picnic is scheduled for July 24, 2011, at Knoebels Amusement Park. Notices with more information about all the Chapter’s activities are sent out via email.
